On the Subject of Geekiness...

Tonight Joe & I watched Star Trek VI together. "Dad," Joe asked, "How come they all have red shirts?"

"Because," I answered, "that's the color the costume people decided to make their uniforms."

Joe scrunched his face up for a moment. "I thought you said that on Star Trek, wearing red shirt means you're going to die!" he said.

NOW IN ALL MY YEARS OF GEEKINESS, HOW COME I NEVER THOUGHT OF THAT?

You know what's funny is that in the original show, it's the gold shirts who do the bossing and the red shirts who die.

Then in the movies, everyone has red shirts.

Then, in the Next Generation, it's the red shirts who command and the gold shirts who die.

Somewhere along the line, there must have been a coup d'etat.

When I was little and watching Star Trek with my brothers we would always point out the red shirted ones in the away teams and wisely tell each other, 'That one's going to die.' And then we would wait for him or her to meet their demise.
