008: Letting the Hate Flow! Trump, Kirk, Kimmel, and the First Amendment Under Siege
What happens when criticizing the president becomes a crime, when free speech is rebranded as “hate”? From Charlie Kirk’s death to school shootings, from the First and Second Amendments to late-night satire, let's peel back the rhetoric, the power moves, and the danger to society. What does this redefinition of dissent under Trump really cost us — and can free speech survive the spin?
As with anyone who is a victim of violence, it is tragic that media personality, commentator and political activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot today.
It was also at least as tragic, if not more so, that on, March 27, 2023, three nine-year-old children - Evelyn Dieckhaus, William Kinney, and Hallie Scruggs - were murdered, along with faculty members Cynthia Peak, Mike Hill, and Katherine Koonce at The Covenant School in Nashville Tennessee.
I only bring this fact up, because a week later, Charlie Kirk said this of that school shooting:
"You will never live in a society when you have an armed citizenry and you won't have a single gun death… I think it's worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights. That is a prudent deal. It is rational."
So yes, it definitely seems as if we live during a very tragic era in history.
